PRESS BRIEFING: Smile with confidence

Modern tooth implants enhance your quality of life.

Our world is governed by speed. Whether in business or in our private lives, we want everything to happen more quickly than before. Mountain biking, inline skating and snow boarding are favourite sports these days. They are fast, but risky. People run a considerable risk of damaging their teeth or jaw if they fall. But what do you do if you suddenly get a gap between your teeth? Modern dental implants are a good solution for everybody. Private clinics abroad make tooth replacements affordable.

"When you have a situation where one or several teeth need replacing, dental implants are the first choice for people from 16 upwards," says Dr. Matthias Meier, dentist and implantologist from Germany. "Unlike the situation with a classic crown or bridge, there is no need to file neighbouring teeth for an implant. All the healthy substance of these teeth is retained, which extends their life considerably."

Modern implantology offers a number of advantages not only for young people, but for older people too, who are having to deal with the prospect of dentures. Dentures can be anchored firmly to implants. Not only does this avoid pressure sores, it also improves both chewing and speech. Patients regain their natural sense of taste. And the dental surgeon mentions yet another advantage: "Implants transfer the chewing forces to the surrounding bone, which stimulates its natural metabolism. This prevents the dreaded bone shrinkage problem caused by insufficient loading."

Titanium for optimum compatibility

Implants are artificial roots made from pure titanium. Its superb tissue compatibility means that this metal is also used for artificial knee and hip joints. No allergic reactions have been reported to date. During the healing period the jawbone forms a biological bond with the implant. In most cases the titanium implants are in the shape of a screw, more rarely that of a cylinder.

Dental implants are generally fitted on an out-patient basis under local anaesthetic. But a general anaesthetic is given on request. "The surgical procedure is roughly comparable to extracting a wisdom tooth," says the dental surgeon. During this procedure the dentist drills one or more holes in the jawbone, screws in the implant and then closes the gum over the site to avoid any infection. During the healing period of around three months (lower jaw) to six months (upper jaw) the bone tissue becomes firmly fused with the implant.

Uncovering the titanium insert only requires a small laser incision, after which the crowns, bridges or dentures are fitted onto the stable base. "So-called same-day implants are not recommended. They require perfect conditions on the part of the patient which very rarely exist," says Dr. Meier.

Care, care and more care

An implantation is preceded by a visit to the dentist. As well as the individual consultation, the natural tooth substance needs to be rehabilitated and any gum disease treated and cured before the surgical procedure. Implant treatment requires comprehensive diagnostics and treatment planning – quite apart from the dentist giving the treatment having to be properly qualified. The examination must include an evaluation of the entire oral cavity, the soft tissue, the teeth and the jawbones.

To avoid any risk, the patient's general health and any illnesses are documented. Treatment planning covers the choice and number of suitable implants and the precise implant position(s). Both are crucial for the subsequent prosthesis. "Correctly seating the replacement tooth is essential for restoring the chewing capability and giving a pleasing result from the aesthetic point of view," explains Dr. Meier. With careful treatment planning implants can last 15 years and longer. But this does require meticulous care on the part of the patient. Experts recommend a dental check-up every quarter, especially for persons with a heightened risk of caries.

Cheaper abroad

Many people in the U.K. are discovering that Eastern European countries offer more affordable alternatives to private medical treatment at home. Private dental clinics, such as the Dentaprime Clinic in the Bulgarian town of Varna, offer tested quality standards, which few U.K. dental surgeries achieve. Thanks to its location in one of the most beautiful holiday regions of Bulgaria, the dental treatment can even be combined with a beach and spa holiday. You can request a no-obligation alternative quote based on the treatment and cost plan here.
