DENTAPHOBIA: the extreme fear of dentists

Nobody likes to sit in the dentist's chair – not even dentists! They might have every faith in the competence of the colleague treating them and modern dentistry technology, but like all of us they still find it difficult to relax.

This phenomenon is described as the basic human fear of being "at the mercy" of someone else, which most of us have felt at one time or another.

"You can't do anything except lie there and hope that the person delving into your mouth will do everything right and do it as quickly and as painlessly as possible."

Over and above this nagging fear, 68% of people in the U.K. suffer serious anxiety ahead of an impending visit to the dentist. Around 10% of these can only overcome their dentaphobia (classed as an illness by the WHO) once they experience unbearable toothache.

It is quite possible that even those anxious patients, who have only ever had positive experiences with dental treatment, become panic-stricken by just thinking of the noise of a drill, the smell of disinfectant or the typical atmosphere of a dental surgery.

Feel nothing and remember nothing …

… that’s what anxious patients desire above all.

This can be achieved with reliable, modern sedation techniques such as TIVA (total intravenous anaesthesia). As recommended by specialist health practitioners, this type of anaesthesia dispenses with inhaled anaesthetics (such as laughing gas). A pain-free and unconscious sleeping state is achieved by administering a sleep-inducing drug together with a pain-killer (analgesic). This type of anaesthesia is gentle and mild and virtually precludes postoperative sickness and vomiting.

Due to the brief period of effectiveness of the anaesthetics used, the TIVA method can be precisely controlled to suit each patient's requirements and the recovery time is comparatively short.

TIVA is also ideally suited for minor procedures, where the patient need not be totally unconscious (analgo-sedation).

Exemplary treatment of patients with DENTAPHOBIA

At the Dentaprime dental clinic anxious patients need never worry again. From the moment they walk in the door they can be secure in the knowledge that their fears are understood and are going to be sensitively dealt with by one of the best dental clinics in Europe.

The Dentaprime Clinic in the popular holiday resort of Varna on the Bulgarian Black Sea Coast shows how high tech dentistry can be combined with a stress-free and relaxed atmosphere of well being. The personal care of the patient before, during and after treatment is exemplary. Experienced anaesthetists devote extra time to advising anxious patients on an individual basis and stay with them throughout the treatment.

TIVA is used exclusively as the anaesthetic method at the Dentaprime Clinic.
