PRESS BRIEFING: Bulgaria: Holiday in the land of contrasts
Health and comfort at reasonable prices
Few countries have to struggle against such outdated clichés as Bulgaria. The food is boring and the hotels badly appointed, according to those who have never been there. Lovers of Bulgaria keep quiet at these comments – and are glad that their holiday paradise stays a secret. Bulgaria has become a modern holiday destination but happily it has not yet raised its prices to match. This is particularly true for northern Bulgaria with the Metropole in Varna and the Golden Sands Resort and the adjoining national park.
Health is a priority
According to legend, pirates once buried golden treasure in the sands north of Varna. But the earth punished them by transforming the gold into the finest sand. Nowadays the golden beach is as much as a hundred metres wide and is bordered by hotel complexes, which have been modernised to western European standards. Numerous hotels with comfortable spas have attractive special offers all the year round. Bulgaria has been catching up fast since 1989 and is well on the way to becoming an attractive holiday destination to visit for health and convalescence. There are luxury hotels for this, such as the Kempinski-Ressort or the most modern dental clinic in Europe, the DENTAPRIME Clinic, which both opened for business in June this year and will further enhance the region’s attractions. More and more British patients are taking advantage of the clinic’s reasonable prices and are combining dental treatment with a holiday on the golden beaches.
History, culture and nature
For a long time Bulgaria’s north has ceased to be merely a destination for beach holidays and party-goers. You can see some of the country’s three-thousand-year history, for instance, in the remains of the Roman thermal baths at Varna, which in the second century AD were among the largest in Europe. Balcik Castle combines ancient Moorish, Gothic and Old Bulgarian elements in its architecture. The Bulgarian feeling for culture and for staging productions is also evident in the “Varna Summer“ music and film festival, where highlights from the worlds of theatre, classical music, ballet, jazz and cinema can be seen from June to September. Nature-lovers will appreciate Bulgaria in particular when the hot months are over. Zlatni pjasaci, the national park, comprises 1320 hectares beyond the hills in the hinterland of Varna and is tempting for extended walks. Walkers can discover up to 80 species of birds alone.
And maybe you will fall in love with Bulgaria too – so it won’t be a secret any more!
