The Sinus Lift
In many cases the upper jaw bone along each side has thinned, especially after years of toothlessness. A sinus lift is a dental surgical procedure that rebuilds bone mass in the jaw.
The so-called sinus floor is a thin bony lamina that separates the maxillary sinus from the oral cavity. This lamina holds the posterior teeth. When molars are lost, the sinus floor recedes to the point where there is insufficient space to set an artificial root, i.e., an implant.
Implants can only be set after sufficient bone volume has been rebuilt. For this purpose the implant specialist performs the so-called sinus lift, also known as elevation of the sinus floor. The following video demonstrates how this elevation is accomplished through a combination of natural bone and bone replacement material:
As can be seen, the open sinus lift created sufficient space for setting the cylindrical implants. Without this procedure, the implant would protrude into the maxillary sinus. As part of a preliminary exam at the Dentaprime Dental Clinic, bone volume is measured using tomography.
The picture-producing tomograph allows for implant planning with the highest precision. Whether the sinus floor is sufficient for setting implants, or whether it must be augmented, can be determined exactly. This also includes the exact determination of length, thickness and angle of the implants. After the sinus lift procedure, another tomographic examination is performed as control. The healing phase lasts approximately six months, after which digital x-rays are taken of the rebuilt area. The implants are set based on the computer-assisted planning, ensuring that sinus lift and implantation can be accomplished with minimal risk.
Bone Replacement Material
We use only bone replacement material of the Bio Oss brand to perform sinus lifts. This material has proven itself in dental practice for more than 20 years. At the Dentaprime Dental Clinic we have also had nothing but good experiences with this material. The pore structure of the material is similar to the pore structure of human bone. How the two knit together is shown in the following graphic:
Left: Bio Oss Matrix
Middle: osteoblasts and blood vessels migrate into the matrix
Right: Integration into newly formed bone mass (in 6-9 months)
The "window" that is opened in the bone is sealed with a membrane so that new bone can form undisturbed. This membrane is resorbable, meaning that the body will eliminate it completely.
Cost of Sinus Lift Surgery
The costs of sinus lift surgery can vary widely, as they depend entirely on the extent of bone loss. The costs are made up of the dental surgeon's fee and the material costs which consist primarily of bone matrix and membrane.
Nevertheless, the costs for a sinus lift of a jaw half run only between 300-600 euros.
